Interpreting represents a true language bridge and makes it possible to conduct meetings, negotiations, conferences, training, trade fairs or conventions between two or more parties who speak different languages. The choice of interpreter is important because the interpreter is perceived by the listener as the main source of information, as the representative of the company or event organisers.
Simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpretingIn liaison interpreting, the interpreter acts as a mediator between the parties, with the task of fostering their understanding and relationship. A good interpreter has a distinct ability to grasp the intentions of both parties and the goals they wish to fulfil during the meeting, knowing how to pick up on and convey the expressive tones and nuances, which often vary greatly depending on the culture. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter translates what is said by a speaker for a group of listeners: while the speaker is speaking, the interpreter listens and takes notes. The speaker pauses every 2-3 minutes to allow the translation to take place. Consecutive interpreting is unilateral when the listeners do not actively participate and bilateral when the parties engage in dialogue. Unlike simultaneous interpreting, the consecutive interpreter requires few tools: a pen and a notepad will suffice. In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter listens to the speakers’ speech through headphones and translates in real time to an audience of listeners wearing earphones: the time-saving advantages are indisputable. Simultaneous interpreting requires considerable concentration, which is why simultaneous interpreters usually work in pairs, alternating at regular intervals. Simultaneous interpreters translate into their mother tongue, but are also able to interpret “actively” (i.e., into the foreign language) for short questions to speakers or comments from the audience.
